I have spent YEARS trying to become a morning person. Literally, I am not kidding. For the longest time, I could not establish a morning routine that motivated me to get out of bed…until I started bribing myself with cannabis.
Recently, I decided to try becoming a morning person again and instead of focusing on getting up at the ass crack of dawn, I decided to first focus on creating a smooth morning routine that would allow me to maximize my mornings. I need something to look forward to in order to get me out of bed quicker.
I figured if I put a routine in place that I could look forward to it would make it easier to get out of bed; then I can focus on getting up earlier. This could be high logic because I typically think through stuff like this when I’m high so *shrug*
Before I continue on, the tips below could be used with products that contain CBD or THC. I tend to use both because I like to feel high when going through my routine and then recover with CBD but if you don’t want the euphoric effects, stick with CBD.

How to incorporate cannabis into a productive morning routine
Meditation
Smoking just before meditating is easily one of my new favorite high activities. Like most people, I have an issue keeping my mind from wandering during meditation. Our minds naturally wander when we ‘aren’t doing anything’ so it can be very hard to sit still and breathe.
The yogi in me knows that meditation has tremendous benefit including:
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Enhancing self-awareness
- Increasing focus (something that I definitely struggle with)
- And a host of other things!
The more we meditate, the easier it gets to focus on the breath.

When I started smoking cannabis before meditating, it made focusing on my breath easier. I also do guided meditations on the Calm App and that also helps makes focusing easier. It also made me feel more connected with nature and more grounded which is an added bonus.
I tend to smoke sativa strains to help my mind focus and give me energy rather than a body high from an indica. As a former yoga teacher, I noticed that some people have an issue sitting still during meditation so a hybrid or indica-hybrid might be a good place to start in that instance.
Mindful Journaling
Journaling is also a great way to start the day. I received The Best Journal Ever (that’s the actual name) as a birthday gift and decided that 2020 would be the year that I finally commit to journaling consistently. Starting my day with gratitude and affirmations really helps me to start the day on a positive note.
Journaling:
- Enables you to see things from a different perspective
- Helps you get your thoughts out of your head and on paper for clarity
- Improves your memory
I found this great article 5 Powerful Health Benefits of Journaling really interesting!

I love The Best Journal Ever because each daily page has you list 3 things you’re grateful for, a strong I AM affirmation statement, and space for my thoughts. It’s short and sweet which is why it fits perfectly in my morning routine. It also has a habit tracker, monthly reflections, and it isn’t dated so you can skip a day and not waste space.
I find that cannabis gives me a sense of mental clarity and that clarity helps me to write in my journal without overthinking or judging myself. I get my thoughts out of my head and can assess a situation with non-judgment.
Before and After Working Out
Anybody else find themselves staring at the timer on the treadmill counting down the seconds to the end of your workout? Can’t just be me!
This goes back to having a mind that wonders often. I don’t hate working out but it’s not my favorite activity. We all know the benefits of a consistent exercise routine but there are also science-backed reasons to use cannabis for exercise. One of those benefits is that cannabis makes working out seem more enjoyable. One study even found that people are more motivated to exercise and recover quicker using weed before a workout. (Take that lazy stoner stereotype!)
I find that when I use cannabis before working out, it does feel more enjoyable and I’m less concerned with the clock. Cannabis is great for pain relief and reducing inflammation so it makes sense that using it as a post-workout could help you recover faster.
Before my workouts, I typically smoke an uplifting strain with a good amount of pinene or limonene terpenes to get mental clarity and a boost of energy. For a post-workout, I’m going to experiment with a topical balm to help with soreness and inflammation.
My Morning Routine & Tips:
Know thyself before setting your alarm
I know myself. I know I will scroll through Instagram and Twitter when I wake up. There are tons of people that suggest eliminating social media from your mornings but I like checking it in the morning. So if you’re like me and still end up scrolling in bed no matter how much you try not to, just bake in extra time for scrolling. I give myself 30 minutes (trying to get down to 15) in the morning to be online.
Get dressed and hit the bong
I mentioned earlier that I bribe myself with weed to get myself out of bed earlier and that’s 100% true but I make sure it’s after I get out of bed and get ready. If I did it in bed, I’d stay in bed but to each their own. Find a wake and bake schedule that works for you!
Sativa strains are my go-to for any time of day so I typically pack my bong with that.
Write in my journal
I like the feeling of starting the day with gratitude and an affirmation. I typically end my nights by filling in the writing section with a reflection of my day. This really helps start the day from a place of positivity and gratefulness. With a clear high mind, the words just flow.

Workout/Yoga depending on the day
Schedules and plans work for me. My phone’s wallpaper is a schedule of what days I do yoga, run or go to the gym so that my mornings are as smooth as possible. High yoga needs to become a BIG thing because I love doing yoga high in my living room.
Post-workout breakfast and tea w/ CBD
I typically have a protein bar or yogurt before working out and then a heavy snack after, depending on the workout. What’s really magical is adding CBD infused honey to my morning cup of tea. This definitely helps me recover after a workout and also brings my THC high down. I still feel calm and relaxed but it brings the high feeling down.
I also use the same CBD infused tea before bed to help me sleep! Cannabis knows what you need and it’s amazing.
Conclusion
A simple morning routine mixed with cannabis can lead to a smooth and productive day. There are science-backed benefits of journaling, meditation, and exercise that overlap with the benefits that you get from consuming cannabis. Why not mix them together to get even better benefits?
When I smoke weed in the morning, I feel like I can tackle the day. Despite stereotypes that weedheads are lazy and sit on the couch all day, research shows that the opposite is true.
52% of those who worked cannabis into their exercise regimens said it made them more motivated to work out.

It’s worth repeating that you can use CBD products or THC products depending on how they affect you. Remember THC will get you high, CBD won’t and will even bring you down off that THC high.
