Journaling while high has easily become one of my favorite methods of cannabis-themed self-care. With journaling, you have a private place to fully express your own thoughts, desires, accomplishments, issues, and whatever else you decide to write.
It is one of the few places where you can fully express whatever you need, without worrying about how it will affect other people. When you can express your thoughts, it helps you process stressful situations.
You can reflect on whatever it is that you need to, without fear of judgment. And when you incorporate cannabis? You really see the magic.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness has been a buzzword floating around lately and foundationally, it really just means being present. Being present in the moment (and your life!) so that you can connect with your true self.
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Mindful
Journaling helps you focus on the present and focusing on the present helps you to stay in tune with your truest self and desires. I sometimes find myself working towards a goal that I set only to realize that I don’t want that anymore.
How often do you find yourself harping on the past or charging full speed towards the future? When was the last time you focused on the present moment?
Years ago I went full speed into being a makeup artist because I LOVE doing my own makeup and thought I enjoyed doing other people’s makeup. The keyword there is THOUGHT. I was so focused on doing all the things and learning everything that I could that I hadn’t stopped to think about whether I actually enjoyed what I was doing!

Sure, meeting Beyonce’s key makeup artist Sir John was fun and exciting but the stress of lugging a clunky makeup kit, table, and chair through a large crowded Las Vegas hotel to do something I only mildly enjoyed, was not.
When I stopped hustling, I realized I didn’t like being that close to other people enough to do this forever (btw I’m all for wearing masks even after the pandemic is over.) I also realized I love doing my own makeup, not so much other people’s.
Accountability
Journaling holds you accountable to yourself. When you write it down, you are forced to hold yourself to the fire and get it done. I have a million thoughts and ideas a day, but the things that actually get done are the things that I write down. Self-discipline and self-awareness are very important to our growth as individuals.

Surprising Benefits of Journaling:
- Boosting Memory and Comprehension: When you write out your thoughts, your mind has to re-compose thoughts and that strengthens cognitive recall.
- Strengthening Self-Discipline: Self-Discipline is like a muscle that needs to be built up. When I set aside time to journal, meditate, etc. it strengthens my self-discipline and that helps with consistency.
- Igniting Creativity: Have you ever done a brain dump? Try doing that after consuming a strain that enhances creativity like Durban Poison or Sour Diesel and get to writing!
I’m definitely the person that has a thousand cute notebooks that are filled with scribbles and random notes, but I’ve never been able to make it a commitment until I started smoking weed before writing.
This past April (after a cross-country move) I found a journal that I’d gotten for Christmas last year and took it as a sign to give journaling another try as a way to deal with all of the crazy 2020 stress.
I can honestly say that journaling every day helps me to start my day on a positive note, get any lingering thoughts out of my head so that I can focus, and hold myself accountable for working towards my goals. Journaling high is a part of my morning routine and cannabis really helps to get my thoughts flowing.
I’m able to write out my thoughts without judging myself. I approach them from a curiosity standpoint rather than being too hard on myself for missing a commitment or falling short of a goal.
Pick a Journal

When picking a journal, you’ll first want to decide what you’ll be journaling for and how much space you’ll need. Do you want a small book to write out your thoughts in the morning or do you want something for brain dumps and doodling?
I currently use The Best Journal Ever and can honestly say it works perfectly for my needs. It includes a daily habit tracker, 30-day reflections, and space to express gratitude, an affirmation, and my thoughts.
In the past, I tried getting into bullet journaling, but I found it too difficult to keep up with. I need something quick and easy and I don’t think I’m artistic enough for it, but it is a great option if you want full control over how your journal looks. There are some great inspirational videos on YouTube about bullet journaling.
If you’re like me and have a ton of half-empty notebooks laying around, pick up one of those and get started.
The most important thing here is to just get started!
When we put things off to wait for that perfect journal that we found after searching Esty for hours to arrive, we delay our progress!
Mindfulness and self-care are not overnight, quick fixes. And that’s okay. It’s going to take work and consistency to learn how to get your stress under control so just start!
To help you get started, I’ve put together some journal prompts to serve as a guide for your journaling.
Remember, the most important thing is to start!
Let me know what strain you’ll be smoking in the comments below!
